My Top Budget Travel Tips

  • Tip #1: Plan ahead: you can get the best flight deals if you plan about 6-12 months ahead of time.
  • Tip #2: Travel in shoulder seasons: if you can, travel just before or after peak seasons. You can get tickets for a fraction of the price, and enjoy smaller crowds.
  • Tip #3: shop for flights using “incognito” mode, browse different days of the week.

Our Experience with Budget Travel

Traveling with a family of four can get really expensive really quickly without budget travel tricks. The main considerations with travel expenses include: airfare, accommodations, and food.

Travel with Points

One of the biggest ways we save is by using travel rewards programs strategically. Credit card points, airline miles, and hotel loyalty programs have allowed us to book flights and accommodations for a fraction of the cost—or even for free! Learning how to maximize these perks has been a game-changer in making family travel more affordable.

Airfare tricks: We use our points to book flights for our family of four! We transfer the points to a “transfer partner” to maximize them, and usually find deals for a fraction of the cost. You can also use sites like kayak.com to browse for the most affordable times and places to travel.

Accommodations: Compare pricing of accommodations to get the best prices: use a site like booking.com to find great places to stay within your budget.

Dining: Research your destination and understand the cost of food before booking your trip. Every place we have traveled outside of the US has been 30-60% cheaper for dining out, which made budgeting easier. Having a kitchen at your accommodations is also helpful. Stop by the store to pick up staples or snacks for the kids so you don’t have to eat out at every meal.
