Our experience in France
France’s reputation precedes it in many ways. As an American traveling to France, we were not sure what to expect. Here are some of the things we did to ensure things went as smoothly as possible.
Say “Bonjour!”
This is probably the number one thing that I recommend! Learning a few basic words or phrases helps so much. Whenever you enter any restaurant, store, or begin any interaction, start with saying “bonjour.” French people are polite and there is an expectation of politeness. Honestly, I appreciate this about France! We found that people were extremely kind and would go out of their way to help.
Slow down for mealtimes
This is another big difference between the US and France. Meals are not enjoyed while walking, and dining is less rushed. Service may seem a bit slower but this is normal for France. Restaurants also open later for dinner, and it is not unusual to eat at 8-9 pm.
