France

France is one of our favorite destinations! Rich in history, culture, affordable travel options, and incredible food, this is one place we keep coming back to.

Language

The language spoken is French, but in Paris a lot of people speak English also.
Some common phrases are:
Bonjour – Hello
Thank you – Merci
Please – Sil vous plait (seel voo play)

currency

The currency used throughout France is Euro.

At a glance

Our experience in France

France’s reputation precedes it in many ways. As an American traveling to France, we were not sure what to expect. Here are some of the things we did to ensure things went as smoothly as possible.

Say “Bonjour!”

This is probably the number one thing that I recommend! Learning a few basic words or phrases helps so much. Whenever you enter any restaurant, store, or begin any interaction, start with saying “bonjour.” French people are polite and there is an expectation of politeness. Honestly, I appreciate this about France! We found that people were extremely kind and would go out of their way to help.

Slow down for mealtimes

This is another big difference between the US and France. Meals are not enjoyed while walking, and dining is less rushed. Service may seem a bit slower but this is normal for France. Restaurants also open later for dinner, and it is not unusual to eat at 8-9 pm.

  • Getting Around – inside of Paris, we love to use the metro or G7 taxi. If you decide to venture outside of the city (which we highly recommend), renting a car is a smart idea to explore some of the amazing sights France has to offer. Rent one here!
